YSEALI Generation: ECommunity!

About YSEALI Generation: ECommunity! - Workshop on Economic Engagement in ASEAN

Hanoi, Vietnam

The YSEALI Workshop on Economic Engagement in ASEAN (YSEALI Generation: ECommunity!) will bring together 80 students and young professionals with relevant experience and interest in the ASEAN Economic Community and the policy development process. Participants will get an inside and interactive view into intra-AEC and US-ASEAN trade relationships. Through the workshop, YSEALI members will learn from economic experts and hone their negotiation, lobbying, and advocacy skills to enable them to make a greater impact in their communities. Applicants should have a passion for engaging with government, business leaders, community organizations, and/or youth groups to advance economic and social development at the community, national and ASEAN levels. Participants will experience intercultural learning that will enable effective cross-country cooperation that they will sustain after the workshop.
Selected applicants will be offered an all-expense-paid trip to join the four-day workshop in Hanoi, Vietnam. Participants will arrive on July 31st and depart on August 5th, while the workshop will run from August 1st-4th, 2017.

Interactive Learning

Through case studies, a model ASEAN Summit, and dialogues with business leaders, social entrepreneurs, and policymakers, participants will explore the ASEAN Economic Community with fellow youth leaders. What’s more, participants will experience hands-on training about presentation, advocacy, and negotiation skills, all key traits that will enable the young leaders to make a profound impact in their communities.

Exchange and Networking

The workshop will bring together 80 ambitious youth who are striving to lead social and economic development efforts in their communities. Focused networking will support youth in forming partnerships with likeminded leaders from across the region. Exchanging knowledge and experience will empower youth to bring about change across national borders.

Cultural Exploration

The content of the workshop is interwoven with the rich culture and heritage of bustling Hanoi. Located on the banks of the Red River in northern Vietnam, Hanoi possesses a one-of-a-kind blend of modern and traditional culture. By visiting cultural landmarks, participants will gain an appreciation for Hanoi’s culture and draw connections to their own communities, helping youth recognize the shared ASEAN identity as well as the region’s diversity and uniqueness.

About

Launched in 2013, the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is U.S. government’s signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. Through a variety of programs and engagements, including U.S. educational and cultural exchanges, regional exchanges, and seed funding, YSEALI seeks to build the leadership capabilities of youth in the region, strengthen ties between the United States and Southeast Asia, and nurture an ASEAN community.

Why

Approximately 65% of people in the ASEAN region are under the age of 35. YSEALI is an effort to harness the extraordinary potential of youth in the region to address critical challenges and expand opportunities.

Who

The YSEALI community consists of bright young leaders, 18–35 years old, from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam who are making a difference in their communities, countries, and the region. Learn more about the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative at yseali.state.gov and join the official YSEALI social media communities on Facebook and Twitter.
